Quartz vs Pyrex Glass Conclusions
We went further in our comparison between Pyrex (borosilicate) and Fused Quartz glass.
Even thought fused quartz allows us to reach higher temperature which will improve the excess heat performance, we will lose more power through the glass which will be difficult to evaluate.
So here is a comparison for 3 different glass tubes:
- Fused Quartz 3.0mm thick (40/34mm x 300mm)
- Fused Quartz 6.0mm thick (46/34mm x 300mm)
- Pyrex 7740 (Borosilicate) 3.0mm thick (40/34mm x 300mm)
As you can see in the graph above, increasing the thickness of the fused quartz tube is not the solution.
Even if the loss is lower in percentage, the absolute loss is almost of the same as the glass surface also increase with the tube thickness.
In conclusion, we will have to consider an IR filter coating inside the fused quartz tube to improve its capacity to keep the heat inside the cell.
